ANTI-AGING YOUR HAIR
Nothing can change your appearance more (for better or worse) than you hair. Style, cut and color can add or subtract years from your looks. How long has it been since you changed the style of your hair? How long have you been going to the same hair stylist? Perhaps it is time for a change.
As we age, it’s important to take a realistic look at our hair style to determine if it’s still current and flattering. It’s a sad fact that as we get older, our hair becomes thinner, the texture changes and it becomes drier and less luminous, so it requires more care. Although long hair can be very pretty, shorter styles tend to give the appearance of thicker, healthier hair.
So if you are ready to make a change, it’s best to make the investment and seek out the advice of a really good hair stylist who can suggest what cuts and colors will best suit you.
While a good cut is essential, changing the color of your hair can also make a dramatic difference. For some reason (convenience I suppose) most women tend to lighten their hair color as they begin to go grey. The result being that most mature women tend to have either grey or blond hair, leaving the days of being a brunette or a redhead behind them.
I was also going that route. I began adding blond highlights to camouflage my grey, but over time it morphed into a shade that really did not flatter my olive skin tone, so I decided to go back to my natural color which is a dark rich red/ brown. Wow. What a change! The darker hair color and new spiky pixie cut took years off my face… and just flew away!
Do you have any hair transformation stories? I’d love to hear them and see the before and after photos.
Love your hair! I am a natural redhead, but was fearful of letting my hair go grey since I’d seen results on older family members and it wasn’t attractive. But last March my mother died and somehow I stopped coloring my hair. Now it is a taupe-y shade, lighter around my face, with deeper tones in back. I’m blessed to have a boatload of hair, thick and with body. I finger-comb it coming out of the shower and I’m done.
I have a blog called Stylish and Sixtyish, which started as a fashion blog for over 60s, but has evolved into more of a lifestyle journal. I’ll start posting more pics of fabulous outfits after being inspired by yours! http://www.stylishsixtyish.blogspot.com
I have not colored my hair since high school and so far I like the salt and pepper look.
I cut my hair very short thinking it would be more age appropriate, I am 57 years young. That being said I feel more feminine and can wear my hair in romantic up styles when it is long.So I have let it grow long again. Its more work but worth it for me. And like you I keep my red/brown color and just love it. You are one fab lady, keep up the great inspiring posts and pics. Cheers!
I’m in full agreement with Tammila with regard length. Depending on the shape of one’s face, very short hair can end up looking severe, I think. Meanwhile, I haven’t had mine coloured in quite a while now, but I do get a brazillian blowout every-so-often. I’m not spending anything like as much time or money at the hair salon as I used to when I was younger, which means I can afford to spend a bit more on clothes too.
I have thick, wiry and wavy hair that just won’t work short. And, I think my gray is much more interesting than a color on my hair. Last year my daughter convinced me to color my hair and I did not like it at all. I wear my gray with attitude and pride! As long as I dress well and wear make-up, I don’t think the gray washes me out.
I love the look of gray hair its so sophisticated and demands respect. I am not sure how much gray I have at this point, I have been coloring my hair for so long. I cant imagine what at a process it would be to let the natural color grow out. I also wear half wigs sometimes with cute hats, great for bad hair days.
It is quite a process to go from coloring to gray. But I get many compliments on my hair (at 61 a woman needs to hear something nice!) that I did not get when it was colored last year. Still have some residual color on the bottom of my hair but getting close. Try it!
I might give it a go. Thanks.
I love your hair Dorrie, how long ago did you cut it into the pixie style? Interesting what you say about short styles being more flattering for thinner hair.
