SHEER STYLING

Sheer styling is one of the biggest trends on the horizon. It was spotted on the runway this season in the form of tops, skirts, dresses, and accessories. Obviously the “bare it all” styling that we saw trotting down the catwalk isn’t going to translate into real life. The look definitely requires some tweaking to make it work in the real world, especially for mature fashionistas. I think a lot of women over 50 are a tad wary of sheer tops because they feel like they show off too much skin or are too hard to wear in a sophisticated way. So the question becomes how do mature women incorporate this trend? The secret is to wear it with restraint.

It’s never a god idea to expose too much skin, at any age. So to make sheer pieces work, it’s essential to find the right garments wear underneath them. I’m a big fan of body suits and tank tops that have stretch to them, so they give you coverage as well as support.

I always make an effort to match my under garment to the color of the sheer piece, so it blends together and looks as though it could be one piece. In this case, I paired it with an old, Donna Karan body suit, so that it gave me a smooth line under the top and didn’t bunch up around the middle.

The great thing about sheer styling is that it’s light weight and layers well. This is especially useful in the hotter months when you need coverage but also want a light weight fabric that breathes. In the cooler months, I like to layer my sheer tops under chunky knit cardigans, denim or leather jackets to give them a more street style feel.

I also wore a sheer top few months ago here on the blog in a printed, button down style by Alice + Olivia.  The ‘see through” trend may have been launched by Madonna in the 80s, but don’t hold that against it! It’s come a long way since then. Haven’t we all?

Gorgeous look. I just got a great Reiss sheer black blouse with silver & gold threads. It will be perfect to wear with a black camisole I think this type of look is very feminine and flattering.

I find sheer styling very difficult. On the other hand, it is a great way to wear something lightweight in summer and still cover my arms. Those boots of yours are to die for.
