JACKET STYLING

I have a nice collection of jackets from my professional days. Until recently, I’ve always thought of jackets as a uniform to be worn to meetings, rather than pieces that could also be worn as a fashion statement. Then my daughter and I had a conversation about “re-styling” clothing. We wanted to take a good look at our wardrobes and figure out a way to use the pieces we already owned. So for the first time in many years, I took a long hard look at my collection of jackets.

They were all quality pieces that just needed a bit of updating, so I took my favorites ones to the tailor. I had a few shortened to make them into cropped jackets. I also had the buttons changed on a few to make them feel more modern. It’s amazing how easy it is to make an old piece feel new again, simply by changing the length or the embellishments.

Next, I went through magazines to see how to incorporate the jacket back into my wardrobe. I was still mentally stuck in the mindset that jackets were part of a professional uniform and I wanted to start wearing my newly re-styled jackets in a more relaxed way. So I began pairing them with skinny jeans and tank tops. This is a new look for me, but one that I really like. Throwing on a great jacket over a basic outfit is an easy way to add a bit of style and sophistication to a look when you’re on the go and don’t have time to think about what you want to wear. So have a look at the jackets in your closet, with a few tweaks, it’s easy to breathe new life into an existing wardrobe.
