GOING GOLD & BOLD

Metallics are very on trend at the moment and a huge departure for me. I love them. I think they’re fun and funky and very modern, but I’m also a little intimidated by them. They aren’t for shrinking violets. When you wear a metallic piece, you really have to wear it with confidence.

When I first saw this metallic DKNY jacket, I wasn’t sure I could pull it off, but my daughter convinced me to try it on, and I have to say, I fell in love with it. It’s youthful, edgy and playful. I tend to gravitate towards more sophisticated styles, so it was nice to incorporate something into my wardrobe that was a bit on the wild side.

So, the question is, how does a mature fashionista wear the metallic trend without looking like she just stepped out of an MTV music video circa 1984? I think the answer is to consider the piece. It should be well cut and made from a quality fabric. There’s a huge difference between wearing a gold bomber jacket designed by DKNY and throwing on a pair of shiny gold stretch pants from Forever 21. Kids look great in anything, but mature women need to invest in better quality pieces. Especially when dealing with metallics which can look cheap when designed in less expensive fabrics. So consider the cut and the fabric.

The other thing to consider is styling. Metallics command attention, so it’s best to keep everything else quite simple. In this case, I didn’t do that, because we were shooting a fun fashion story for Instagram. In the real world, I would probably bring the “bling” down a notch and style this without the necklace and with a black shoe boot instead. However, this is Vegas, so if I want to walk around looking like a hip hop mogul, no one is going to stop me.

I think metallics are a fun trend, and it’s important to be able to have fun with fashion. This is a lesson that I’ve learnt from Iris Apfel, a 93 year old style icon who is definitely not one to shy away from making bold statements. She lives by the adage that “more is more” and it works for her because she wears everything with such confidence. The key to having great style is wearing things with confidence. This jacket makes me feel like a rockstar, and you can’t really argue with that.
