STRIPED TO THE MAX
Maxi dresses. Anyone who reads fashion magazines knows that they are the “go to” outfit for summer. They’re pretty, easy and very wearable…and for some reason I don’t ever wear them. I buy them, they sit in my closet for a few seasons, and then I pawn them off on my daughter. I don’t know why…I don’t know why I don’t wear them, and knowing that, I don’t know why I continue to buy them. But that’s the way it’s been, up until a few days ago when my latest, destined never to be worn maxi dress arrived via UPS from Zara. I mean at $29.99 on sale…I figured I would give it a go, even though I didn’t have high hopes for it.
Surprisingly, I fell in love with this one. Granted, it has stripes, which I’m a real sucker for…but more importantly, it fit like a glove. That’s the real challenge. Maxi dresses really need to fit well. For petite women that means making sure that they don’t overwhelm a small frame, for the curvy fashionista, that means making sure that they don’t cling around the middle or pull across the hips. A maxi dress should skim the body, accentuating it in all of the right places, and camouflage the less desirable bits with a little extra room where needed. Quite often this means tailoring is required to make them work.
What I love about this dress, is how easy it is to wear. Maxis also pack well and are perfect for traveling. You can layer cardigans, jackets and sweaters over them, and style them in a variety of different ways. In this instance I paired my dress with a fun mesh hoodie. When Las Vegas hits 111 degrees in the summertime, this type of outfit allows me to remain cool, yet not too exposed. Many of you who live in warmer climates have asked about being stylish in extreme heat, I think this is a great way to wear a sleeveless dress, without exposing too much skin. A sheer blouse works equally as well to give the arms some coverage.
Maxis really do suit almost every body type, the secret to finding the right style is to simply try a lot of them on until you hit the perfect one.
A beautiful look, the dress is very nice, and the sweatshirt is cute. Great proposal, elegant and modern.
What a lovely compliment! Thank you, Josep!
Exactly…it’s not that maxi dresses don’t look good on a certain body…it’s the fit of the maxi dress (with the possibility of alterations!!) This looks fab on you! jodie

Thanks Jodie! Isn’t it great that style can be achieved so easily, at such an affordable price point, when we are willing to invest a few dollars in alterations? ~ Dorrie
