STATEMENT JEWELRY
I’m a huge fan of statement jewelry. I think one of the secrets to styling fashion for women over 50 is to pay close attention to the details, because it’s the details that really define our personal style. As I’ve gotten older, my taste in jewelry has changed pretty radically. I used to be more inclined to wear delicate, fine jewelry, and now I gravitate towards bigger, bolder pieces that are a bit more unusual. I like to collect pieces that look like they could tell a story. A few years ago, my daughter bought me a beautiful gold enamel necklace designed by Alexis Bittar and a love affair was born. Since then, he has become my “go to” for jewelry, especially statement pieces.
I spotted this beautiful feather necklace in the Alexis Bittar boutique in Las Vegas a few months ago and was immediately enamored. It’s definitely a departure from my usual look and I had no idea what I was going to wear it with, but IÂ knew I had to have it. I think the key to creating a signature style is to simply follow your heart. Sometimes pieces speak to me that are completely outside of my usual style, but if I love it, I buy it and figure out how it’s going to work later. In this case, I decided that it would work best paired with a structured tuxedo jacket. Since my wardrobe is rather minimalist, pieces like this add the “wow factor” needed to keep me from disappearing into the background. Let’s face it, it’s rather difficult to ignore a lady with feathers cascading down her cleavage. It may not be subtle, but it’s a head turner! This is Vegas after all.

This is lovely. I made a necklace very similar to this and gave it to Greetje. She has worn it quite a bit on her blog.

You are a talent Suzanne. Would love to see a picture of the piece you made.
It’s very far away now…in Amsterdam. : ) Greetje from No Fear of Fashion has worn it quite a bit though.
That necklace is quite a show stopper!!! My mom would especially love it because she complains when I leave her decollate open—she feels “naked”—so this would fill in the area perfectly! jodie

Yes, it is a great “filler”piece to wear with a low neckline. I’m loving Alexis Bittar’s collection this year.
I, too, am a fan of “statement jewelry” always have been — especially large ethnic pieces. Love all Amber — especially the big bold pieces worn by Iris.
