REWORKING YOUR WARDROBE
I’ve had this orange cashmere cardigan in my wardrobe for a number of years, but have never been able to find a top that worked really well underneath it. I’ve paired it with an array of sweaters, tank tops and t-shirts, but the look remained dull and uninspired. Then the other day, I had a thought…what if I wore it backwards and pinned it closed in the back with a great broach? So I tried it. It wasn’t bad, but  there was still quite a bit of material swimming around the middle which was  overwhelming my frame. So I gathered it together, made a bunch, and tied it with an elastic hair band to give the sweater some shape. Suddenly I had a completely new top. It was a bit different, but felt very hip. I loved it.
I’m not the creative type when it comes to reworking the things in my closet. If I need something re-styled, I go to my tailor and I leave it in his capable hands. However, this little experiment taught me a lesson. There are so many ways we can wear the pieces in our closet, yet we get stuck wearing the same things together, in the same way, over and over again. I think what makes “youth oriented fashion” so interesting, is the way it’s worn. Dresses are worn over jeans, long sweaters are worn as dresses, fashion has become something to experiment with. As mature fashionistas, it’s good to remind ourselves to mix it up, to keep things fresh, although that doesn’t necessarily require a shopping spree, just a new way at looking at one’s existing wardrobe.
I’ve taken the weekend to sift through my closet and really look at the pieces I don’t wear, decide why, and then see if there is a way those pieces can be restyled that will breathe new life into them. This is a great way to spend an afternoon with a girlfriend. You can toss around ideas and help one another pin things together in reverse. It’s not all going to work, but if you come up with a hand full of new looks for pieces you have relegated to the back of the closet, it’s an afternoon well spent.

great outfit, love it
I have a pair of skinny jeans in a similar print. I’ve been wearing them with black or navy tops for the past few months, but you’ve reminded me that they look great with red! I’ve got a new pair of grey ankle boots, so I think I’ll combine the jeans and boots with a red top and grey, black, and white animal print scarf one day this week!
I really enjoy every new post you put up — you’re very inspiring! Thank you 🙂
Great look…great combo….love it all! And it’s super fun to find a different way to wear the same thing—it just takes a little time and imagination! jodie

Great idea! I’d love to see the back of the top too. Got any pics?
This post did inspire me to push my style envelope this week. I pulled out my skinny jeans in a print similar to the jeans you’re wearing here, and wore them with a tomato-red and charcoal-grey striped deep V-neck top, dark grey ankle boots, grey suede belt, and a light-grey-and-white scarf in a woven print that has stripes in it; large pewter-colored dangling earrings with swirling stripes on them, and, since I don’t have a tomato red lipstick and most “nude” lipsticks make me look sick, MAC lipstick in Stone, a grey-ish brown. Much more print mixing than I usually do, but it worked! I think because of all the repetition of the grey and repeating the element of stripes. I would like to add another pop of the tomato red, either a lipstick or a bag, or maybe earrings or or grey-white-and-tomato-red print scarf, if I can find one, to the look, I think. I’m going to try the jeans with a grey-and-white striped top, now, too. Thanks, Dorrie!
Great restyling idea, Dorrie! I need to go through my wardrobe as well.
I love orange as it really brightens my skin.
