OVERSIZED KNITS
Who doesn’t love a cozy, oversized knit sweater on a cold winter day? This season in particular, I find myself gravitating towards big, snuggly ponchos. Not only are they chic, but they are incredibly easy to wear. I generally tend to pair my oversized tops with a slim cut trouser, a pair of skinny jeans or a tube skirt to give it balance, otherwise it’s quite easy to get lost underneath all of that fabric. I think women are often under the misguided impression that hiding our bodies under large tops and loose fitting trousers is the best way to camouflage the bits we don’t like. However, it can actually add pounds rather than disguise them. So it’s important to understand proportion when wearing oversized pieces. They are best paired with a slim fitting piece that accentuates the body. This rule of thumb works equally well for all body types, and especially well for those of us who are vertically challenged. Although choosing to wear the same color palette from head to toe is definitely the best way to appear taller and thinner, another option is to match the color of your shoe to your bottoms, like I have done with this look.
I think it’s also important to add something sexy to an oversized look. It can be a great pair of heels or a pretty pair of earrings, something with a bit of a “wow” factor…..because dressing comfortably is all well and good, but we still want our “comfy” outfits to be sexy and stylish as well. It’s so easy to become dowdy in winter. I’m not immune, trust me. See this scarf? Cute isn’t it? What you can’t see is down the back it has built in mittens, because I always lose mine. This does not rate incredibly high on the style scale, so I’m wearing a pair of lovely heels. Hopefully they will detract attention from my not so stylish “idiot” mittens.

I love the look of oversized knits. So useful and cosy.
I love them too. This one is great investment piece that works well with jeans or a cocktail dress.
you look fantastic!
(love your idea for idiot mittens – LOL!)
Thanks! It gets cold out out there early morning. Love them but not as a fashion statement.
Smart style tips as always! Here in NYC, it has been unusually mild so the poncho look is perfect. It’s funny but even though I am fairly tall (5’7″), I never wear ponchos because they seem hard to handle with shoulder bags and packages.
True Rebecca, it is difficult to carry a shoulder bag with a poncho or a cape and as you see I’m not trying. A cross body bag does work well.
how chic this outfit is. The scarf with the mittens give the outfit the fun aspect. Which makes it even more perfect. The trousers are to die for. I checked the site of 7 for all mankind, but they are not there anymore (Oh forgot, I wasn’t to spend anything anymore… OK back in the saddle.)
Beautiful bag and shoes. One question out of curiosity: when you need a big jumper, it is rather cold right? Don’t you get freezing feet then with these beauties which have open toe and heel?

I’m so impressed with you and the no shopping thing……going to try it for a New Year’s resolution HA HA Open toes are OK in Vegas year round as it rarely gets past the need for a sweater temperature.
Better own up…. Went shopping with my two “Shopping Saturday-friends”….. totally broke my vow again. Everything went so well until one hour before closing time (in The Netherlands shops still close haha). And then we hit that one shop…: dress, legging and boots. I need a psychologist.
